Rose Alpern, formerly of Ithaca and a longtime resident of Syracuse, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at Birchwood Health Care Center. Rose was the daughter of Anna and Louis Shulman of Ithaca and graduated from Ithaca High School at the age of only 16. Mrs. Alpern was a co-owner of Superior Electric Corp., one of the countrys first electrical supply warehouses, for many years. Previous to that she was the first female bank officer of Ithaca Savings Bank. Rose was an avid Mahjongg player and adored her grandchildren. Mrs. Alpern was predeceased by her husband, Albert Alpern, in 1983; her sister, Mary Shulman, in 1942; and her brother, Michael Shulman, in 2004. Survived by her children, Mary (Joseph) Luton and James (Marion) Alpern; two granddaughters, Allison Luton and Jessica Alpern; a nephew, Ken Shulman; several other nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2007, at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 E. Fayette St. Friends may call on the family on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the chapel.
