Hans J. Gideon, 87, resident of DeWitt, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015 to be with his beloved wife Rosie. Hans escaped from Germany in 1939, later joining the US Army, serving during WWII and Korea. A decorated war veteran, Hans was awarded the Purple Heart and was nominated for the Silver Star. Upon his return to civilian life, Hans was a respected licensed electrician and member of IBEW Local 43. Always an active member in his community, Hans served as a past-president of the Kiwanis Club of DeWitt and a Past Lieutenant Governor for the Ontario Division of the New York State Kiwanis. A Past Master of Philo-Mt. Sinai Masonic Lodge #968 F n AM, Hans also served as a Grand Director of Ceremonies for the New York State Masons. As a longtime member of the DeWitt Republican Committee, Hans enjoyed working on many campaigns; especially proud of campaigning for his son. Family was most important to Hans who enjoyed living together with his son, David, daughter-in-law, Kathy, and especially his grandsons, Joshua and Alex who each shared a unique and very special bond with their Papa. Hans is also survived by his nieces and nephews who have remained so close to him throughout his life. On behalf of Hans, the family would like to acknowledge the very special and exceptional care that he received at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, Community Living Center during his final days. The extra special care and devotion to Hans and his family offered by Dr. Abid Iraqi, PA Robin Duger and the entire nursing staff will always be remembered and we thank each and every one of you from our hearts. Services will be conducted on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 E. Fayette Street. Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the chapel immediately prior to the service. A Masonic service will be presented at the beginning of the service. Burial will be in Beth El Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Hans may be made to Shaarei Torah Orthodox Congregation of Syracuse, 4313 East Genesee Street, DeWitt, NY 13214 or to the Syracuse VA Medical Center CLC Fund.
